In short, the PKard reader for the iPad is awesome and really completes the iPad as fully functional mobile computer for this humble Air Force reservist. Microsoft can't release office for the iPad fast enough now in my opinion for the workflow to be truely seamless. In fact, the Colonel I currently work for in the Army is strongly considering buying Ipads and PKard readers to issue to the project management in our office, having seen how well it works. For me, this has made the iPad into the true mobile device that I have wanted from the day it was announced. I was half expecting to be throwing away my $150 for a non-functional gimmick, but very much the opposite. I can honestly say I am shocked at how well this works. No additional setup is required and it really does basically "just work." I am now able to securely access the Air Force portal, generate my reservist orders, and access my OWA email.

The dongle pairs with a free app from the app store that basically acts as a sandboxed, secure browser preloaded with all sorts of useful. It has a slot for the CAC and a mini-USB for passthrough charging of the iPad. The PKard reader is a small dongle ($150, delivered within 2 days or placing my order) that plugs into the iPads dock connector slot.

Having now used it for 3 weeks, I can safely say that this is the missing link in making the iPad truely useful for me as a standalone traveling solution. So, when a security company called PKard released a CAC reader for the iPad last month, I had to give it a try. It became an additional thing I pack, and not my sole traveling computer. mil related, I needed to drag the laptop and CAC reader with me, pretty much negating the ultra-portable nature of the iPad. The limitation has always been CAC support. Since I became an iPad user, it has become my primary traveling computer, and is perfect for that, as it gets through airline security without having to be removed from my bag, stores documents and books nearly perfectly, and can access my computer at hime for anything i really need to get that I've forgotten. This has never been a huge issue.I have a CAC reader for my laptop, and it seems like OSX now supports the CAC to a useable level. I have spent a lot of time traveling for work, and now that I am a reservist, I do a lot of my Air Force stuff from my home office. For almost everything we do for both jobs, I need to log in with the CAC (common access card). Background: I was active duty Air Force for almost 10 years, am now an Air Force reservist and current Department of the Army civilian employee.
